Special Boat Service

The Special Boat Service is one of the most formidable and highly trained amphibious assault forces in the world. They operate as the special forces arm of the Royal Marines, and their recruits must have already served at least 18 months in a regular armed forces unit, and have 3 years remaining to serve. Their duties include coastal reconnaissance, sabotage, drug interdiction, maritime counter-terrorism and anti-shipping roles.

Anyone meeting the minimum length of service criteria can apply for the SBS. They share the same gruelling selection process as their sister outfit the SAS, which only 10% will pass. This
includes weeks of marches across the brecon beacons, both alone and in small teams, carrying up to 50 pounds of gear including their weapon and performing set tasks at rendezvous. This is followed by parachute training, jungle warfare, combat and survival training, first aid and Combat Survival in which recruits must evade capture for a week while surviving only off the land, before undergoing interrogation.

After this joint training phase, SBS candidates will undergo further training in amphibious warfare,  including diving, canoeing, underwater demolitions, reconnaissance and surveying. On completion of this training they will become a qualified Swimmer Canoeist.
