Royal Marine Commandos are some of the most dedicated and professional soldiers in the world, and their Officers must demonstrate exceptional leadership skills. Their training is long and arduous to enable them to operate effectively in even the harshest conditions. Becoming an officer in this elite unit requires great commitment, ability and physical fitness, and only the very best will succeed
The Royal Marines were officially formed in 1755 as the His Majesty's Marine Forces under the control of the Admiralty, and were tasked with shipboard defence and boarding as well as amphibious assault. They saw action from the napoleonic wars and the crimea through to the Chinese Boxer rebellion, earning many distinctions. During the First World War they took part in many critical operations including landings in Gallipoli and the Dardanelles and the raid on Zeebrugge. In WWII they saw action in all theatres including Europe, North Africa and the Pacific, and subsequently took part in operations in Korea and The Falkland Islands and were regularly deployed in Northern Ireland.
3 Commando Brigade was formed during the second world war initially as the 3rd Special Service Brigade comprising troops from both the Army and Royal Marines. Unlike regular infantry the Commandos were picked for their individuality and resourcefulness, using small raiding parties and unconventional tactics to disrupt the enemy and destroy important objectives that a larger force could not reach. They took part in several important operations during the war including the successful attack on the German occupied dry dock at St. Nazaire. They also completed their objectives in Operation Jubilee, the failed Dieppe raid, and later saw action in North Africa and the Far East, being renamed to 3 Commando Brigade towards the end of the war.
Following The Second World war the army commando units disbanded and the Brigade was formed entirely from Royal Marine units. They have been deployed in Korea and Cyprus as well as Egypt during the Suez Crisis. Their most famous operation was in the Falklands War, where along with elements of the Parachute Regiment they successfully retook much of the main island from Argentinian forces.
