The Parachute Regiment, in its modern form, has its roots in the elite airborne units formed during World War II at the request of Winston Churchill, inspired by German paratroopers. The new force was expected to fight behind enemy lines, vastly outnumbered and without support, and its members were carefully selected, well equipped and given rigourous training. This important task took them all across europe to Italy, France, Holland and Germany, and they played a crucial role in securing the beachheads during the Allied invasion of Normandy.
The liberation of Holland, Operation Market Garden, was the largest airborne assault ever undertaken. This was a very high-risk operation that was hampered by the logistical problems of landing so many troops, tanks and equipment at once. Although the Allies had some successes the primary objective of securing a crossing of the Rhine river into Germany ultimately failed, due in part to a lack of accurate intelligence on German forces in the area.
In one of the most memorable actions of the campaign the 2nd Batallion of the 1st Airborne Division, with no armoured support and few anti-tank weapons of their own, successfully captured and held the north end of the vital bridge at Arnhem for almost four days despite facing a German force four times larger than expected including tanks and artillery. The British XXX Corps that was due to relieve them had been held up at Nijmagen and did not arrive in time. By the time the paratroopers eventually surrendered, the initial force of no more than 800 men had been all but wiped out.
Since the war, The Parachute regiment has seen action in Malaya, Indonesia, Egypt, Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. One of their most well-known deployments was in the Falkland Islands, where along with units of the Royal Marine Commandos they successfully retook the main island of East Falkland from the occupying Argentinian troops.
