and the Royal Naval Air service. Since then it has formed a crucial
part of Great Britain's armed forces. Although severely cut back
following the end of the First World War the service more that proved
itself during WWII, from a vastly outnumbered Fighter Command helping
to thwart Hitler's plans for invasion to the strategic bombing of
Germany, attacking of supply lines in North Africa and 617 Squadron's
famous 'Dambuster' raid.
Since the war the RAF has provided national and international air
defence and carried the UK's nuclear deterrent during the Cold War, and
has been involved in conflicts in Korea, Kenya, Egypt, The Falkland
Islands, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. The service maintains
permanent deployments in Germany, Cyprus, the Middle East, Bosnia and
Gibraltar as well as providing relief and aid following disasters such
as the 2004 earthquake in South-East Asia. The RAF currently employs
